Here we are; there they are
They are elderly and brown
Stalks are hollow wooden flutes
And I say look, these two are
The last two flowers in the field
Fuzz is swirling swirling swirling
Leaden sky and sharp lake wind
Leaves are swirling swirling swirling
Autumn auburn aubergine
Laughter comes out of her tummy
Fireworks, hot air balloons
Laughter throaty and triumphant
She is three, my wonder child
And she does not know the biggie
Does not know the biggie yet
And I hate for her to learn it
And I know that know she must
And sometimes I think it's proper
Walk it like one walks the plank
And sometimes I think I'll go
Brave and largely unconcerned
Swigging from a bottle of whiskey
Belting out the Marseillaise
Turn my jaunty back to gunmen
Close my eyes and jump the earth
And some other times I want to
Grab my kids, stop, drop and roll
Stop the merry-go-merry-go-round
Hide in grass and fix a tent
Over our heads and dandelions
Their warm breath, their laughter
Lie there peeking through our fingers
Lie there giggling, undiscovered
While the trees whose lives are slower
And the lakes whose days are longer
And the sky with life eternal
Watch in silence and hauteur
